Why The Future Doesn't Need Us is an essay written by Bill Joy; the cofounder of Sun Microsystems. One night at a conference, Joy encountered two of his scientists friends; Ray, who studied consciousness, and John, who invented the first blind reading machine. All three scientist started enaging in a conversation about technology and Ray bought up the fact that improvement of technology was going to increase and that humans were going to become robots. John said it wasn't possible becaaause robots couldn't be conscious. Thus came the argument that technology is going to take over and humans aren't going to be needed.
Joy listed an example of a technology/scientific advance that could go along with the argument. In an excerpt by unabomber Theodore Kaczynski, it states how in the future, either two things will occur; the machines mightbe permitted to making their own decisions without human oversight or else human control over the machines might be retained.
i like your summary about the article i see we had the same ideas. In your own opinion do you think that robots will take over our future?
ReplyDeleteYour summary is short and right to the point. I think we should use it tomorrow in class. Anyways, as I pointed out the author made it difficult to argue back yet with the way the economy is and everything right now, I don't see technology taking over the world unless we encounter a lot of money suddenly.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I don't know. It does seem like technolgy is advances too fast but I don't think they are and I don't think Bill Joy did either. Yea, he did give examples of technological advances but it was like he was given examples from what the other scientists' had researched, not his own. On page 429, he states, "Nothing aboout the way I got involved with computers suggested to me that that I was going to be facing these kinds of issues," meaning technology taking over. I do believe that since technology is advancing fast that some changes are going to occur but not so much as to humans "surrendering" to robots/machines/computers.
ReplyDeleteOk, it seems the only way I can post up here is by putting anonymous and its MY blog. ugh! Anyways yea I totally forgot that our nation is in debt and it's true, unless we come into a ton of money, there's no way that technology is taking over anything.
